Is Dress Code Important?

Blazers make great umbrellas!

Blazers make great umbrellas!

For most people, one thing pops into mind immediately when they think of boarding school: dress code.

Classic TV images of plaid skirts, knee socks, and blazers infiltrate our perception of what a typical prep-school student looks like—but do all private school students really dress like that?

Well, yes—and no.

While every boarding school almost certainly has a ‘dress code’ of sorts, the style and requirements differ widely (and knee socks are almost never a requirement anywhere other than television). Some schools may enforce a standard school uniform every day of the week, while others may simply require no sweatpants during academic hours. Many schools, such as Cheshire Academy, have an “academic dress” requirement where students are to dress professionally but may choose their blouses, pants, skirts and ties according to school guidelines and  only wear a traditional blue school blazer on Fridays or for formal campus events.

But why is dress code important? Some of our students weigh in:

“While most students would rather be casual all the time—because it takes less effort and is generally more comfortable—I think dress code is a positive part of the Academy. It provides more structure on how we are to look, it allows us to express ourselves in a new way, and it prepares us for a life beyond Cheshire Academy.” –Tommy, ‘15

“The formal dress of the Academy shows a tradition we have held since the Civil War and is a part of the school’s history. Many students enjoy embracing that tradition—and coming from a school where I once wore a full uniform everyday, wearing a blazer on Friday is not very hard!” –Tara, ‘18

While dress code can be a hot point of debate among students, there are many reasons that this is a popular policy across private school campuses:

Promoting a sense of Community. Dress code and uniforms bring everyone together as a united team and increases school spirit.

Improving the Classroom Environment. A dress code can limit the amount of distraction in the classroom so students can focus on learning and schoolwork.

Fostering Self-Esteem. Having a standard dress code or uniform teaches students to focus on what’s inside, not who can afford to dress the best.

Preparation for Life beyond High School. Learning how to dress professionally early on in life will undoubtedly assist students as they embark on college and job interviews later in life—many alums report feeling a “step ahead the rest” when it came to knowing how to dress professionally with ease.

Just like a sports team wears a uniform, boarding schools often look at the academic community as a team. Above all, dress code is there to promote a sense of safety, unity, and pride.

How did you hear about Cheshire Academy?

My sister also attended CA!

What brought you to Cheshire Academy? Did you want to attend initially?

No one is ever too keen on leaving what they know and making new friends, but now I’m happy to be here. I thought Cheshire Academy would be more like public school, but it’s not as cliquey.

What are a few words you would use to describe Cheshire Academy?

Cheshire Academy is different—in a good way. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made, even though I was hesitant at first. It’s a friendly community with a spot for everyone.

What are the people like at Cheshire Academy? Students? Faculty?

The students are friendly and the teachers are understanding.

How would you describe your classes? What is your favorite class? Does any specific project or lesson stand out in your mind?

My Honors English class is challenging, but my History class is the most interesting. My teacher knows when to stick to the work or stray from a topic and allow discussion.

How have you grown most as a person during your time here?

I have grown in my work ethic and maturity. The students at Cheshire are all mature and responsible—it rubs off.

What is a favorite event you attended at CA?

Freshman we had a Hypnotist visit campus, and he hypnotized the students. He made one girl believe she was the laugh police so she tried to arrest everyone in the audience who laughed!

What is one of your favorite memories from Cheshire Academy so far?

The first time I came to school in my formal dress was like “wow—I’m really a student here now.” It was a great feeling.

The first day of school was really nerve-wracking, because I had to make new friends all of the sudden. I had no clue where to sit in the dining hall—but I was invited to sit down at a table by someone right away. Now I’m the comfortable one inviting other new students to sit down with me.

What has surprised you most about being a student at CA?

It’s interesting how there are only 360 students here—you really get to know everyone. I’ve become more accepting of other cultures since it’s such a diverse community.

In my old school, everyone worried about ‘who’s who.’ That’s not the case here. It’s a family. We’re all here to learn.

What advice would you give prospective students about coming to CA?

Coming to Cheshire Academy was the best decision I’ve ever made. Even though you might feel nervous at first, you’re going to love it.

Anything else you’d like to share about your experiences here?

You really get to know people for every corner of the planet, and everyone here has a different story. Here, I have the opportunity to learn about what goes on in the world besides where I live.

How did you hear about Cheshire Academy?

I was looking for private schools in Connecticut, when I saw Cheshire Academy!

What are some of your extracurricular activities?

I do field hockey in the fall and track and field in the spring. I also do drama after school in the winter, and I am a member of the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).

What class or extracurricular activity means the most to you?

Playing on the field hockey team means the most to me. My teammates voted me captain, and because of that I had the opportunity to help motivate and lead them which was a very rewarding experience!

What are the people like at Cheshire Academy? Students? Faculty?

As I walk around campus there is always a friendly, warm, and welcoming aura emitting from both the students and faculty. The students are always eager to meet someone new. This is something I’ve found out when touring prospective students! Two weeks into school, you will already be familiar with the CA students because of our small and welcoming community.

As for the faculty, they are always easy to approach. Because most of them live on campus, they are available for extra help after school, which can help tremendously!

How would you describe your classes? Does any specific project or lesson stand out in your mind?

My classes are fun and my teachers encourage participation. My ecology class did a project where we got to go outside and survey the trees around campus. Not only was it hands on, but we got to leave the classroom as well! But more than just ecology teachers have fun projects to do. In all of my classes, speaking is encouraged in order to help engage a student more. Have a question? Feel free to ask it here!

How have you grown most as a person during your time here?

I came from a public school that was way too easy for me. I could do the homework in five minutes and was never challenged enough in class. I came to Cheshire because I craved having my brain hurt at the end of the day! Well, I got what I wanted. It was a tough transition, but eventually, I matured enough to manage my time properly and soon enough, my brain didn’t hurt so much after. I was used to the course load, and now, as a junior, like to help younger classmates through their struggles.

What is one of your favorite memories from CA so far?

My favorite memory from CA so far was the experience of performing in “The Philadelphia Project”. It introduced me to acting in a play, and I absolutely loved it! Everyone was so great in helping me learn the ropes of something that was completely foreign to me. The experience I got was so positive I now do the play every winter!

What advice would you give to prospective students who are thinking about coming to CA?

My advice: Relax, and take in everything slowly. Make sure you’re looking into a school that will help you make great high-school memories! Also, don’t be afraid of new things. Since coming here, I’ve tried field hockey, acting, track and field, and volleyball. All new things to me that Cheshire was able to provide in a comforting and accepting atmosphere!

Exciting, a safe community, sincere. Everyone is real here.

The faculty here wants to help you—they make sure that you don’t fail. The students are all friendly and work together to achieve the same goal. Everyone gets involved.

How nice and outgoing the students are. I was always so shy, but people would just come up to me and talk.

What advice would you give prospective students about coming to CA?

Just go for it. There aren’t many students who ever regret coming to Cheshire Academy—I don’t know anyone who has ever thought that. Everyone has a great experience here.

Close-knit, great education, strong sense of community…

The students are like a family—everyone knows everyone here. And the teachers are great. The small class sizes enable everyone to speak to each other.

How different it was from my old school. The teachers at Cheshire Academy really want to connect with the students and teach.
